Welcome to Citiwire.net! A full solution to our tens of thousands of yearly traffic deaths can’t come exclusively from increased seat belt use and the like — we need instead to start redesigning the physical layouts of our communities. Similarly, we can’t rationally retreat from recognizing climate change and the profound impacts it’s already having in high temperatures and devastating weather events. This week’s columns — mine and Ed McMahon’s contribution on the climate front — suggest that solutions to such pressing problems require solutions a long distance from the unpleasant (and often irrational) tenor prevailing in this country’s current political debates.
