Welcome to Citiwire.net! The fiscal crisis for state and local governments, amplified by the national/global fiscal crisis, is getting much worse — focus of my column. A big new need: to restore the smart intergovernmental collaboration downgraded ever since the Reagan administration. At the same time, as Citistates Group Associate Peter Katz (author of The New Urbanism) notes in the Citiwire.net column of the week, a significant chunk of the subprime mortgage mess can be traced to housing units allowed by local governments on the unsustainable urban fringe. With ‘smart growth’ principles — maybe even with federal encouragements — we could do a lot better in the future.
