Welcome to Citiwire.net! Very different columns this week. Mine, related to income tax increases on the most affluent several states have passed this year, focuses on the seldom-discussed but major inequity among income groups built into our state and local tax systems. Bill Fulton, by contrast, offers us a common sense (and delightful) new way to look at Portland’s fabled success. I’d add one detail: Portland’s nature-in-town treats. They’re symbolized by the Great Blue Heron “rookeries” that Audubon leader Mike Houck can show one, his binoculars trained from 37 stories up on the deck of one of those new South Waterfront high-rises.
